Local charities share community funding from Bradford funeral directors

Two well-deserving community projects making a positive impact on people’s quality of life in and around Keighley have received a financial boost thanks to Edwin Pounds & Sons Funeral Directors’ Community Fund.

The latest recipients are:

Age UK Bradford District – an established charity providing much-needed support to older people in the area, ranging from friendly wellbeing calls to social groups, grocery shopping, pharmacy deliveries and advice to elderly people on coping with the costs of living. The award of £1000 will enable Age UK to set up and run a reminiscence group.

Inner-City People’s Project – set up in 2024 to provide disadvantaged people in the area with educational support, skills training and help to find work and improve their life prospects. The award of £400 will enable the organisation to set up a gentle/seated exercise class.

Cheques were presented by members of the programme’s judging panel: Councillor Mohammed Muazzam (Riddlesden and Stockbridge wards) and Kevin O’Hare, Principal of Keighley College.

Edwin Pounds & Sons Funeral Director Rachel Abbey said: “We are delighted to be able to offer support to these much-needed projects in the Keighley area. Both organisations are dedicated to making a difference to people’s lives and providing meaningful support to people as and when they need it most. We’re proud to help them continue their positive work.”

Cllr Mohammed Muazzam added: “Edwin Pounds & Sons’ Community Assistance funding gives us the opportunity to highlight the kindness and support that’s happening right on our doorstep. We’re looking forward to seeing these projects develop.”

The team at the Keighley branch of the Funeral Directors launched their grants programme early last year when they were known as Melia Powell Funeral Services – they have since merged with brand Edwin Pounds & Sons Funeral Service, part of the Funeral Partners network, to strengthen their support for clients and families across West Yorkshire, Bradford, Keighley and Sandbeds.

The aim of the Community Fund is to provide financial support for community-based projects that improve the quality of life of residents and benefit people who live within three miles of their funeral home in Cavendish Street. Projects must be non-profit and align with one or more of the fund’s categories; Health, Education, Employment Opportunities and Poverty or Social Deprivation.
